The Crisis Pet Retention Program provides resources to pet owners experiencing crises relating to poverty, houselessness, job loss, or other systemic issues and inequities. Funds for this program allow the Lawrence Humane Society to proactively ensure that Douglas County residents do not suffer through giving up a family pet because of financial hardship. We understand financial circumstances alone are not reliable indicators of the capacity to love and care for a pet.
Over the years, our data shows that pet owners would choose to keep their pet if they were provided short-term help. That’s where the CPR program comes in. The Lawrence Humane Society recognizes the importance of the bond people have with their pets and works to keep pets and people together.
If you are struggling to provide basic pet care, to access veterinary care, or to find housing for you and your pet, we can help. Each individual’s circumstances are different but here is a list of services we frequently assist with:

Yes! With your generous gift to the Crisis Pet Retention Fund, you’ll know you’ve changed the life of a pet and its owner right here in Douglas County. Below is a list of services and the costs associated with those
services.
WHAT YOUR DONATION PROVIDES:
WELLNESS PACKAGE $250
This package provides necessary vaccinations, flea/tick preventatives, spay/neuter surgery, or an overall wellness checkup for pets in need.
PREVENTATIVE SURGERY PACKAGE $500
This package provides a pet with a routine surgery like dental, a mass removal, etc.
HOUSING CRISIS RELIEF $750
If a pet and its owner are facing housing issues, this package provides relief in the form of a pet deposit or pet rent, 10 days of boarding, and can help supply essential pet care items like collapsible crates, food, etc.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL PACKAGE $1000
In the case of an emergency medical situation, this package covers the cost of an offsite medical care trip.
